Kevin and I have finally decided to put in a garden after talking about it for a long time. With the price of gas affecting everything else we buy, especially food, it's time to start. Three dollars for 4 ears of corn! With the help of a friend from church who has been gardening for years, they tilled the plot and tilled again with some compost from an area mushroom farm. You don't want to drive by this farm when the wind crosses the road....ughhhhh.
This friend, Joe and his wife, Louise, have a great garden. Before starting ours we visited their home & talked to them about what to plant. That night we went home with cucumbers, peas, okra & homemade tomato salsa. We were further encouraged after seeing their chest freezer full of vegetables!
The plot is about 22 X 80 ft, haven't measured, just a guess. So far, we have a row each of corn, black-eye peas, tomatoes & okra. Yet to be planted are green & yellow peppers, squash, peanuts, zipper peas & whatever else we can come up with if room. Also marigolds & other flowers and herbs. We plan to put up some bird houses too.
Should be an interesting first-start. We'll see who yields the most...us, the bugs or the critters!!!
Photos to come....
